Depth of Mercy

by Charles Wesley (1740)

Depth of mercy! Can there be
mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God his wrath forbear,
me, the chief of sinners, spare?

I have long withstood his grace,
long provoked him to his face,
would not hearken to his calls,
grieved him by a thousand falls.

I my Master have denied,
I afresh have crucified,
oft profaned his hallowed name,
put him to an open shame.

There for me the Savior stands,
shows his wounds and spreads his hands.
God is love! I know, I feel;
Jesus weeps and loves me still.

Now incline me to repent,
let me now my sins lament,
now my foul revolt deplore,
weep, believe, and sin no more.

I'm acutely aware that I haven't been posting original writings on the blog recently. That's partly because I'm amazed at how these words written some three centuries ago still ring true today, that the "I" in the songs applies to each believer in this incredibly wide span of time, each of us so undeserving of this redeeming grace that helped us escape the wrath of God.

I hope the poems/songs help you to meditate during this Holy Week, and perhaps help you to start grasping how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ!
